Two Polymer Adhesives

Structural adhesives that have assumed increasing importance in recent years, chiefly in metal bonding, are the two polymer adhesives, that comprise a thermosetting and a thermoplastic polymer, including certain elastomers. Although each component has adhesive properties by itself, considered overall, the endjoint system forms a stronger and versatile adhesive. The two polymer systems have been particularly successes as film adhesives.

The physical properties of each component polymer are modified by the addition of the other, thus the best resistance of one may be increased, while that of the other is reduced, similarly, the toughness of one may be increased by sacrificing flexibility of the other. It is therefore possible to formulate a variety of adhesives with a wide range of characteristics by simply varying the ratio of one polymer to the other, and by taking account of the ratio, properties can to some extent the predicted.

Adhesive Tape

This tape have glue on the tape like on 3 M Adhesive, sometime just in one side but also can available on both side of the tape. For example, rearview mirror in cars are held up with strong double sided tape. Cell phone and cameras have a lot of low strength tapes designed to keep component in place without the hassles of leaking liquid materials.

Patent on this kind of tape was release by PSAs appeared in 1845. This creation using natural rubber, pine gum, and turpentine were mixed together for a surgical tape. Then followed by water-activated adhesive tapes soon, and in 1925, Richard G. Drew of 3M created the first masking tape. The kind of this tape also used in car paint layer, the tape could be removed without damaging the paint. He introduced the first transparent tape in 1930, with soon became known as Scoth tape.

Currently tape technology have improved more complex and make perfect, on modern PSA tape typically consist of four thin layers; baking, release coating, primer, and adhesives. Flexible backing materials are usually about 50 to 100 micro meter thick include paper, polyethylene films, cloth, metal foil, vinyl or foam. The release coating often a polyvinyl carbamate, to prevents the tape from adhering to itself when pulled off the roll. Other side of backing is covered with a primer that has an affinity for the adhesive and allows it to attack the back.





The tape adhesive material itself is made for a given application. The main component of the adhesive itself is always a polymer. Styrenic block copolymers, for example are often used for adhesive on packaging and double sided tapes. Office tapes usually employ water based acrylics and silicone adhesive are found on medical tapes.
